Role Based Access Control

What is role based access control (RBAC)?

Within business organisations and companies its long been recognised that many different roles with different privileges exist. Commercial applications, many dating back to the early 1970’s when they were first put into production in financial, insurance companies etc implemented limited types of access constraints loosely based on a users role within the organisation. Often these role based access control (RBAC) systems were simple and very much based on specific roles within the application. Back then there were no general purpose models defining how access controls, rights or privileges could be based on formal roles with little analysis of the security of the applications. The applications or systems were developed by many different vendors for a wide range of companies with no formal agreed upon definitions or regard for formal guidelines, standard or regulations.
